Self Portraits - Face Look Project

The last two weeks we have been making self portraits. Students have been working from photographs, mirrors and memory. The emphasis has been on structure and using lovely thick and colourful paint. Ive also encouraged the students to use the brush as a drawing tool. Some students have started on their second work, the portrait being more formal the second more abstract.

"Face Look" Cultural Project 2013

The "Face Look" project is underway. The Cornucopia Art Group received a cultural grant to run the portrait painting/making project from the Ryde Council. The group have been working since January on preparation for the project. The main outcome for the project is for the artists to produce a body of work centred around the theme of explorations in to identity. Official start was last week and the first workshop was centred around building a 'small' clay bust. The results were exceptional. We have a total of 14 artists involved in this project. The small busts will be fired - here they are drying.

PLANS FOR 2010

Cornucopia Art Program has got off to a great start with the wonderful news that TAFE Outreach at Meadowbank has agreed to fund a new 10 week program. This will mean that the current group of 8 artists will continue on Tuesday mornings and an additional class will run in the afternoon. The new class will be for artists with some experience who wish to develop their studio practice and start thinking about developing a body of works. Many of these artists have considerable talent and have been waiting patiently for funding to become available. So watch this space or more news.

Art Exhbitions 2009

In 2009 Artists from Cornucopia Art Program exhibited in several exhibitions. In May artists from the group won a 2nd Prize and a highly commended at the Broughton House Exhibition in additions others sold several works. In October members of the group took part in a group exhibition 'Coming Together' to celebrate Mental Health Week. The exhibition was held at Macquarie Hospital Education Centre.

Cornucopia Artists held their annual Art Exhibiton in early December at the Cornucopia Cafe. It was an overwhelming success with record sales of artworks, 3D works (Ruth's plastic bags) and cards. Some of the money raised through sales of the cards was returned to the artists and money put aside to buy art materials.

Artworks are still available for viewing at the Cornucopia Cafe.

2009

Students this year have entered in a number of exhibitions with great success. Currently student's works are on exhibition at the Education Centre at Macquarie Hospital Ryde. Students are now working on making cards and other artworks to be exhibited at the end of the year in their annual art exhibition held at the Cornucopia Cafe. Its been a very busy year.

ART News!

This term several students have been attending ceramic/pottery classes at Macquarie Hospital. Anne Coroneos a TAFE teacher with an enormous amount of experience in this area has been taking the classes. Along side of this Margaret has been attending the art group on Tuesday morning lending advice to members and making plans to get the art studio up and running.

New Art Studio

Here at Cornucopia an art studio has been created (the old shed never looked better)! The Create team have carried out some serious cleaning, paving and look some new windows to create a beautiful art space. Soon students will be able to work independently. There are plans for 'artist in residence' and this will have a flow on effect to students, new courses and opportunities for exhibitions. Watch this space. Margaret Westcott

Semester 1

This term students concentrated on portraits and faces.

Students entered 6 works to the Hunter Hill Art Show, three works were selected for hanging - this is quite an achievement. A large felt work completed by the group received a highly commended.

During the term each student worked towards developing their own body of works. Continuing on will be independent artworks in our new studio. Photos coming soon. We have also been commissioned to make at least 5 paintings - one to be chosen to be hung at the Corunucopia Cafe.

A GREAT START TO 2008

Students started the term with a visit to the Willoughby Art Workshop. Students viewed the exhibition (it just happened to have my paintings exhibited) and then toured the workshop. Students had a short drawing lesson and some morning tea in Studio Two, to get some first hand experience of where a real life artist works. Not to glamorous but plenty of room. We hope to go back again.

This term we will explore people and faces and then perhaps work towards abstraction.

Art Exhibition and Award

The student exhibition was held from the 11th - 30 th October at the Cornucopia Cafe in the grounds of Gladesville Hospital. A range of students works made during the year included drawings, mixed media, printmaking and paintings. Students were given awards this year in recognition of their outstanding achievements in art. Several artworks sold. Paintings will remain available for a short while yet so those of you who have been to the Cafe, which is also a great place for coffee and lunch, come down and take a look.
